INTERROGATORY XXVI.

In what cases, by what authority, under what conditions, and with what results as to recommittals, are abridgements of the term of imprisonment granted by tickets-of-leave or otherwise?

The System of abridging the term of imprisonment-

of those prisoners sentenced to tivo

years

and upwards hav recently been adapted by Authority of the Secretary of State- It is

granted to those prisoners only who have by their steady and persevering industry to gether with Uniform good Conduct been recommended to the Governor by the Superintendent as deserving of the indulgence; when granted, it is in condition that the prisoner leaves the Colony and do not return to it during the unexpired portion of his sentines. The Scale of remission is similar to that at present

forces in the Convict Prisons at home, and during the time it has been tried in this Garl has worked sat

satisfactorily out of 39 Prisoners who have received a remission of Sentence, 3 have had then pordons rescinded for being at large within the Colony before the expiration of the unexpirent portion of their Sentence, and the has been recommitted!
